Okay Remote Work, but Some Flexibility Lacking

I've been a Software Developer at Harris for a bit. It's an interesting place, especially with their focus on acquiring different enterprise software companies. Remote work is a thing, which is good, but there are definitely pros and cons to their approach.

Pros

As a remote Software Developer, I appreciate the freedom to work from home daily. There's good autonomy for handling my tasks within my product development team. It's solid for not having to commute at all.

Cons

Actual work flexibility beyond just location isn't always a thing. Core hours can be pretty strict, making it hard to adjust schedules, even for a remote role. It's not as flexible with my time as I'd hoped for in software engineering.

Advice to Management

Managers should push for more genuine flexible hours, not just remote-first, across different enterprise software divisions. It would really boost morale for the Software Development teams.

Leadership needs more empathy, less micromanaging
Pros: Job security in the enterprise software space is solid. I met some really great people in the Ottawa office. The pay for Software Developer roles is pretty competitive for mid-level folks.
Cons: Upper leadership often feels disconnected from daily project work. There's a big focus on acquiring new companies, but internal growth isn't prioritized. It can be frustrating when they don't grasp the complexities of maintaining some of our older IT solutions.
Advice to Management: Truly listen to your engineering teams, don't just make them jump through hoops. Invest in training and development for current employees. Empower managers to lead their teams without constant micromanagement from the top.

Solid Job Security if You Perform
Pros: Job security is really strong here, especially if you're working on legacy vertical market software. They don't lay people off easily. You can mostly do your thing as a Software Engineer, remote from Dallas, without too much micromanagement. It's a big, corporate company.
Cons: Career growth can feel slow. There aren't many opportunities for quick advancement or working on cutting-edge tech. Sometimes it feels like you're just maintaining old systems. Innovation isn't a huge focus, which can get boring.
Advice to Management: Focus more on employee development and introducing some newer technologies. It would help retain talent.

Hands-off leadership, good for independent work.
Pros: As a software developer, I've had a lot of autonomy in my daily tasks. Remote work is well-supported, which is great for flexibility. The decentralized model has its perks for independent contributors.
Cons: Leadership can feel pretty disconnected from the day-to-day. Career growth paths aren't always clear, and feedback from senior management is scarce. There's not much proactive coaching or mentorship for us in the vertical market software teams.
Advice to Management: Focus more on developing clearer career progression frameworks and provide more consistent, actionable feedback and mentorship. It would really help boost engagement and retention, especially for remote software developers.
