Pay and Benefits Are Just Okay Here

Magic has some decent points for base pay, but overall compensation, especially bonuses and raises, could use a lot of work. It's a typical startup environment.

Pros

The base salary for a Software Engineer in the San Francisco office was pretty competitive, especially for a fast-paced SaaS startup. They offered decent health insurance and a 401k match, which is a solid plus. The equity options had some potential, but that's always a gamble.

Cons

The annual bonus structure wasn't very clear, and raises were pretty stingy after the initial offer. For software development roles, the overall compensation package felt a bit behind other big tech companies once you factored everything in. I felt underpaid compared to my peers at similar companies, even with the hybrid work model flexibility.

Advice to Management

Really look at market rates for compensation, especially for experienced engineering talent. Be more transparent about bonus structures and future raise potential.

Pay is Fine, Benefits Could Be Better
Pros: The base salary for a Software Engineer here is pretty solid, especially for a mid-sized SaaS startup. I've seen worse. Health insurance coverage is decent too, which is a big plus in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Cons: Beyond the base, though, it's tough. Bonuses are super low, almost non-existent for most roles. And the stock options package isn't great; you don't really feel like you have skin in the game. Don't expect many perks beyond the standard benefits.
Advice to Management: Look at making the bonus structure more transparent and actually achievable. Also, revisit the equity package to attract and retain top talent, especially for technical roles.

Okay Flexibility, Good for Remote Tech Roles
Pros: I've gotta say, the remote work policy is a big plus here. As a Software Engineer, I really liked setting my own hours most days. It's pretty solid for work-life balance if you can manage your tasks. Good for tech industry WFH.
Cons: But there are still mandatory on-site days in the San Francisco office sometimes. That's a pain if you're truly remote. Project deadlines also mean you're working late anyway, so 'flexible hours' isn't always real.
Advice to Management: Be clearer about truly remote vs. hybrid expectations. Don't promise full flexibility if you'll later require in-office presence.

Good projects, but job security is a concern.
Pros: The actual engineering work is super engaging; you get to tackle complex problems. For remote roles, the work flexibility is great, and my immediate team feels pretty stable within our current project, which helps on a daily basis.
Cons: Job security is a real concern here, which is typical for a startup environment. We've seen some team restructuring, and funding rounds always make you wonder about potential layoffs. It's tough when you're not sure about the long-term plan.
Advice to Management: Be more transparent about company finances and the long-term vision for different teams. It would really help ease job security fears and make employees feel more secure in this fast-paced startup environment.
