About The Role
This is a hands-on platform ownership role, not just a maintenance position. You will be the primary custodian of the Microsoft Fabric environment, responsible for governance, security, cost management, and platform architecture. You will work day-to-day with a team of data analysts, data engineers, and analytics delivery managers to enable high-quality data products across the business.
You will be someone who thinks in architecture — who understands why a Bronze workspace should be isolated from Gold and Semantic layers, why capacity allocation matters, and how to design workspace and security structures that scale. You are equally comfortable getting into the details and stepping back to advise the team on platform direction.
What You'll Do
- Own and manage Microsoft Fabric capacity, workspace structure, and tenant-level settings
- Design and maintain workspace architecture (e.g. Bronze / Silver / Gold separation, domain-based workspaces)
- Manage Azure Active Directory (AD) groups and role-based access control (RBAC) across all Fabric workspaces
- Ensure platform security standards are applied consistently including data access policies and audit logging
- Monitor and optimise Fabric capacity utilisation and costs; produce regular cost reports and flag anomalies
- Define and implement data quality standards and pipeline monitoring across the Fabric environment
- Partner with data engineers to ensure ingestion, transformation, and serving layers meet agreed quality thresholds
- Establish alerting and observability practices for data pipelines and workspace health
- Build and maintain data pipelines within Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Pipelines, Dataflows, Notebooks
- Contribute to ETL/ELT design using PySpark, SQL, and Fabric-native tooling
- Support the team in applying medallion architecture principles (Bronze → Silver → Gold) across the platform
Required
What You'll Bring
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric including Lakehouses, Pipelines, Data Warehouses, and Notebooks
- Strong Azure fundamentals — Azure Active Directory, resource management, IAM / RBAC
- Demonstrated experience designing workspace and capacity architecture in Fabric or Power BI Premium
- Understanding of medallion architecture and why workspace separation matters (e.g. Bronze isolated from semantic/gold layers)
- Data engineering skills: PySpark, Python, SQL — comfortable writing and reviewing transformation logic
- Experience with platform cost monitoring and optimisation in Azure / Fabric
- Excellent English communication skills; able to work collaboratively across time zones
Advantageous:
- Microsoft Fabric certification (DP-700 Data Engineer Associate or DP-600 Analytics Engineer Associate)
- Experience with OLAP or analytical databases — particularly ClickHouse (SaaS) or similar (e.g. Redshift, BigQuery)
- Exposure to AI/ML tooling within the Microsoft ecosystem (e.g. Microsoft Fabric AI skills, Azure OpenAI, Copilot integration)
- Previous experience in a platform lead or senior data engineer role with some people or mentoring responsibility
- Background working with or for Australian clients
