Chemical Engineer

Good Stability with Solid Benefits in a Global Company
Pros: I really value the job stability at AkzoNobel. As a Chemical Engineer in the paints and coatings industry, it's reassuring to work for a global leader. The compensation package, especially the health insurance and retirement plans, is quite strong, which was a big draw for me. My team in Houston is very supportive, and I've learned a lot from experienced colleagues. There's also a decent emphasis on work-life balance, allowing for hybrid work which helps a lot.
Cons: While the overall pay and benefits are good, sometimes the annual raises don't keep up with market rates as much as I'd like. Career growth can feel a bit slow, with promotions taking longer than at some other companies. The internal processes can also be a bit bureaucratic at times, which can slow down project execution.
Advice to Management: Focus on improving the career progression framework and ensuring compensation stays competitive with market trends to retain talent. Streamline some of the internal approval processes to boost efficiency.

Decent Hybrid, But Project Demands Are Real
Pros: As a Process Engineer, the hybrid work arrangement from the Strongsville, OH office was a big plus. It's nice to have some flexibility during the week. Vacation time is also pretty solid, which helps when you need a break.
Cons: The biggest issue for work-life balance is when large production projects or new product development cycles hit in the chemical manufacturing industry. You'll work long hours, and it's expected. It can be tough to disconnect fully then.
Advice to Management: Management needs to really look at project timelines and resource allocation. It'd help a lot with burnout among the engineering teams. Encourage actual downtime instead of just talking about it.

Solid Benefits, Pay is Just Okay
Pros: The health insurance is good, and they have a solid 401k match. As a Supply Chain Analyst, the base salary was competitive for Chicago. The hybrid work option is a plus.
Cons: Raises are usually small, and the annual bonus isn't huge. Don't expect rapid salary growth here, even in the chemical manufacturing sector. It's tough to negotiate much.
Advice to Management: Review compensation bands more often for supply chain roles. Better incentives could help with retention in this competitive market.

Solid base pay, benefits are okay for a big company.
Pros: The base salary for a Sales Representative in the coatings industry is pretty competitive. They offer a good 401k match, which is a big plus. Health insurance is decent, covers most things without huge out-of-pocket.
Cons: The bonus structure for field sales isn't always clear or easy to hit, making variable pay inconsistent. Dental and vision benefits aren't the best, felt like I was paying a lot for basic coverage. Raises are often minimal, not keeping up with inflation.
Advice to Management: Re-evaluate the bonus structure for the sales team to make it more achievable and transparent. Also, consider improving dental and vision plans to be more competitive with other global companies in the chemical manufacturing sector.

Okay Work-Life, Tough for Production Roles
Pros: The pay and benefits are solid for a global company. You get decent vacation time, which helps. There are good opportunities for career growth if you're willing to commit a lot of time.
Cons: Work-life balance as a Production Supervisor is often tricky. Long hours are common in chemical manufacturing, especially if you're working onsite shifts. It's hard to find good work flexibility when production schedules are tight.
Advice to Management: Try to better staff critical onsite production shifts. Improve work-life balance for those in manufacturing roles. More support for managers balancing operational demands with personal time would really help.

Leadership's fine, but senior management struggles
Pros: My direct manager was usually solid, always there to help. I learned a lot about process optimization within the chemical manufacturing industry. There's a decent team vibe on the plant floor.
Cons: Senior leadership at the Chicago, IL plant often feels out of touch. Decisions for Process Engineer roles take forever to get approved, slowing everything down. It's frustrating when you can't get clear direction from the top.
Advice to Management: Really listen to your plant floor and mid-level managers. They're on the ground. Improve communication and speed up decision-making for important projects.

Decent pay for a corporate gig, but could be better.
Pros: The health insurance is pretty solid here, especially for a large corporate company like AkzoNobel. They also have a good 401k match, which is important for retirement planning. As a Sales Representative in the paint and coatings industry, the base salary was generally competitive for the Atlanta office.
Cons: Annual bonuses weren't always hitting targets, making it tough to really feel rewarded. There wasn't much room for significant salary increases unless you switched roles, which is frustrating. Dental and vision benefits felt a bit basic compared to other big companies.
Advice to Management: Review the bonus structure to make it more achievable and transparent. Also, consider more regular salary adjustments for experienced Sales Representatives, not just when promoting.

Decent Benefits, Pay Could Be Better for Engineers
Pros: The medical and dental insurance plans are really good, you can't beat them for a large corporate company. The 401k match is also decent, which helps for long-term planning.
Cons: Base salary felt a bit low, especially for experienced Production Engineer roles in the Chicago, IL office. Bonuses aren't always consistent, which makes it tough to plan your finances.
Advice to Management: Review salary bands for key engineering positions, especially in competitive markets like Chicago. Make bonus structures more transparent and consistent.

Career Path Can Feel Stagnant Here
Pros: You'll get solid experience in the chemical industry, working with various paint and coatings products. As a Process Engineer, there are always new problems to solve, which keeps things interesting day-to-day.
Cons: Career growth feels really slow, especially if you're not in management. It's tough to see a clear path for advancement, and I felt a bit stuck in the same role for a while in the Chicago office. Promotions don't come easily.
Advice to Management: Create more defined career ladders and mentorship programs for technical roles, especially for junior and mid-level chemical engineers. It would help a lot with retention if people could see where they're headed.

Flexibility is okay, but not for everyone here
Pros: Some teams in the Chicago office do get a hybrid work option, which is nice. It's usually two or three days WFH, so that helps with commuting. For some senior corporate roles, there's even more leeway.
Cons: Many of us in the coatings industry are still expected to be onsite almost every day. It's tough when you see others get to work remotely. There isn't much personal flexibility in day-to-day hours, especially in manufacturing.
Advice to Management: Consider expanding real hybrid or flexible hours to more roles, not just a select few. It would really boost morale across the board, especially for those in plant operations.
