Senior Software Engineer

Leadership at Insulet needs more consistency
Pros: As a Senior Software Engineer, I've really enjoyed the technical challenges within the medical device industry. My direct manager in the Acton, MA office is solid, and the hybrid work arrangement offers decent flexibility.
Cons: Upper leadership often lacks clear vision for software engineering projects. There's too much churn on strategic goals, which impacts team focus and morale. It can feel like a slow-moving corporate environment at times.
Advice to Management: Leadership needs to establish clearer, long-term strategic goals for engineering teams. More consistent communication from the top down would help everyone stay on track and reduce unnecessary project pivots.

Decent place for steady work, mostly stable
Pros: It's a big player in the medical device manufacturing industry, so there's generally a sense of stability. As an Associate Quality Engineer, I always had clear tasks. They don't seem to do huge layoffs often.
Cons: Growth paths can be slow, making internal promotions tough sometimes. While not at risk of layoffs, the job security feels more like 'don't make waves' than true long-term investment. They could do more to keep talent.
Advice to Management: Focus more on clear career development paths. Invest in retaining good people instead of just relying on industry stability. Encourage innovation more from the ground up.

Growth is tough on company culture
Pros: I've enjoyed working with my immediate team here. As a Software Engineer, the mission to help people with diabetes is really motivating. They offer solid hybrid work options, which is a big plus.
Cons: The company culture feels a bit inconsistent, especially with all the growth and leadership changes. Sometimes it's hard to get clear direction across different departments in the medical device industry. There's a lot of bureaucracy now.
Advice to Management: Try to streamline communication and empower individual teams more. The constant leadership shifts make it hard for people to feel secure and understand the long-term vision.

Pay's okay, benefits are pretty solid
Pros: The health insurance plans are actually pretty decent for the medical device industry. You get good coverage for families. The 401k match is also a solid perk; it's not huge but it's there.
Cons: Base salaries for Clinical Affairs Specialist roles could be better, especially in the Acton, MA area. It feels like they're a bit behind market rate. Annual raises aren't super generous either, which is tough.
Advice to Management: Review base salaries for long-term employees, especially for core roles like clinical specialists. Being competitive with industry pay could really boost morale and retention.

Flexibility is tricky for field roles
Pros: The company has good benefits and the product, OmniPod, truly helps people with diabetes management. For many office roles, there's a decent hybrid work option, which is a plus. It's a growing company, so job security feels pretty stable for the medical device industry.
Cons: As a Clinical Specialist, work flexibility is super tough. You're constantly traveling in the New England region, seeing patients, and there's not much room for adjusting your schedule. It makes work-life balance a real challenge, especially when you need to be onsite so often. Remote options just aren't a thing for this role.
Advice to Management: Try to find ways to offer even a little more scheduling flexibility for field-based Clinical Specialists. It's a demanding job, and some autonomy would go a long way for morale and retention.

Solid Job Security for Core Roles
Pros: Job security here is pretty good for essential roles in the medical device manufacturing industry. The demand for insulin pump technology keeps growing, so the company stays busy. It feels like a stable corporate environment with steady projects.
Cons: While core engineering jobs are safe, some peripheral departments might see more turnover. If your role isn't directly tied to production or product development, you might not feel as secure. Growth often means reorgs, which can make some people nervous.
Advice to Management: Keep communication clear during periods of growth and reorganization. Ensure that job security isn't just for a select few, but for all valuable employees.

Leadership's a Mixed Bag at Insulet
Pros: Working in diabetes technology is genuinely impactful; you feel like you're making a difference with insulin delivery systems. The people on the project teams are smart and dedicated. It's a stable company in the medical device industry.
Cons: Leadership consistency is a big problem here, especially for Senior Project Manager roles. Some managers are great, but others struggle with communication and setting clear direction. This often leads to unnecessary re-work and frustration.
Advice to Management: Invest more in developing middle management and promoting leaders who truly understand how to empower their teams. There's a lot of talent, but it feels underutilized due to a lack of clear vision from some senior leadership. Improve transparency from the top.
