Solid Benefits in Aerospace, Pay Can Be Slower

I've been a Systems Engineer at RTX on the Waltham, MA campus for a few years now. It's a massive player in the aerospace and defense industry. The benefits package is really strong, but sometimes the pay raises don't quite keep up with the workload or market changes.

Pros

The medical and dental plans are really good, definitely a standout. You also get a decent 401k match, which is a big plus for retirement planning. For a large corporate environment in the aerospace and defense industry, the core benefits are quite reliable.

Cons

Annual pay raises can be on the lower side, especially for established engineering roles. It feels like internal pay progression sometimes lags behind what you could get elsewhere. Bonus structures aren't always super transparent either, which can be frustrating.

Advice to Management

Focus on more transparent and competitive salary adjustments for long-term employees. It would greatly help retain talent in key engineering roles and improve morale.

Good stability for defense engineers
Pros: Job security is really strong here, which is a big comfort as a Software Engineer. Being in the aerospace and defense sector means steady government contracts, so layoffs aren't a constant worry. The benefits package is solid too, especially the health insurance.
Cons: Things move slow, thanks to all the bureaucracy. This can make career growth feel pretty tough sometimes for engineering roles. It's a large defense contractor, and innovation isn't always top priority in our Tucson office.
Advice to Management: Please try to streamline some processes. It feels like we're constantly fighting red tape. More opportunities for growth and quicker project approvals would make a big difference for us engineers.

Leadership needs to step up big time
Pros: The work itself for a Senior Systems Engineer on specific programs can be interesting. Job security is pretty solid here as a big corporate defense contractor. Benefits are decent, too, for most employees.
Cons: Leadership often feels completely out of touch with the ground teams in the Dallas, TX office. Decisions come down from above with little understanding of actual project realities. It's frustrating when managers don't empower their hybrid work teams.
Advice to Management: Listen more to the engineers and technical staff. Empower middle managers to make real decisions. Transparency about big picture changes would really help morale.

Decent Flexibility, But Depends on Role
Pros: I've had a pretty decent hybrid work model as a Systems Engineer here. You get some days WFH, which helps with the commute into the Dallas office. It's usually 2-3 days remote, which is a nice perk for a big company.
Cons: The work flexibility isn't great for all roles, especially for defense contractors. Many engineering and defense contract jobs still require you to be onsite most of the week. Full remote work is really tough to get if you're dealing with hardware or classified projects.
Advice to Management: Keep pushing for more remote options where possible. It really helps retention, especially for the non-classified engineering roles. Managers should have more autonomy to grant flexibility.
