SPD is a charity in Singapore dedicated to helping people with disabilities or those who may develop disabling conditions to maximise their potential and integrate them into mainstream society.

Today, SPD delivers over 20 programmes and services spanning early intervention, day care, senior care, day rehabilitation, employment and educational support, assistive technology, community activities and lifelong learning, as well as case management. Through these services, we serve individuals with physical, sensory and developmental needs, as well as autism, across different life stages.

Founded in 1964 by a group of Rotarians, we were known as Society for Aid to the Paralysed (SAP). In its early years, SAP operated a sheltered workshop that provided meaningful employment to persons with disabilities who faced difficulties seeking open employment. We were renamed Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) in May 1998 and later to simply SPD in July 2014 to better reflect the work that we do of serving people with a wide spectrum of disabilities beyond only physical.

To strengthen governance and better position the organisation for future growth, SPD transitioned from a society to a company limited by guarantee (CLG), becoming SPD Ltd. with effect from 1 April 2026. As a CLG, SPD Ltd. remains a non-profit entity fully committed to carrying forward the mission and work of the former society.

Solid Engineering Role with Great Flexibility
Pros: Working here at SPD, a tech company, has been a good experience. The team is collaborative and supportive, which is fantastic for a Software Engineer. I've had solid opportunities to learn new tech and grow my skills. The remote work setup offers excellent flexibility. It's a stable environment, and I appreciate the company culture.
Cons: Sometimes the approval processes can feel a bit slow, especially for new tools or initiatives. Promotions don't always happen as quickly as some might hope, which could be improved for career advancement.
Advice to Management: Streamline approval processes to empower teams and review promotion pathways to retain top talent. Clearer communication on company direction would also be beneficial.

Great place for tech professionals seeking balance.
Pros: SPD offers fantastic work flexibility, making hybrid work really smooth for a Software Developer. The teams are incredibly supportive, always ready to help and collaborate. I've learned a lot from my senior colleagues, which is great for career development in the IT services industry. It feels like a stable company where you can really grow your technical skills.
Cons: Sometimes, the project approval processes can feel a bit slow, which occasionally delays getting started on new features. While there are learning opportunities, the path for career growth to senior roles isn't always super clear, and promotions can take a while. Communication between some departments could also be improved for better overall efficiency.
Advice to Management: Focus on clarifying career progression paths and streamlining internal project approval workflows. Enhancing inter-departmental communication would also benefit overall project delivery.

SPD Culture is okay, but could be better
Pros: I've met some really good folks here as a Software Engineer. The teams are generally supportive, and it's a decent place for entry-level tech talent to get started. The hybrid work model in the Seattle, WA office is pretty solid.
Cons: There's a lot of corporate bureaucracy, which slows things down. Sometimes, the company culture feels a bit stale compared to other big tech firms. Decision-making isn't always transparent for individual contributors.
Advice to Management: Try to empower individual contributors more. Streamline approval processes to foster a more agile environment and update that corporate culture.
