Work-Life Balance is Okay for Engineers Here
Pros: The hybrid model is a nice perk; I could work from home a couple of days a week. For a big tech company, the campus in Sunnyvale, CA has good amenities too. That helps a bit with daily stress.
Cons: Project deadlines can be super tight, especially in ad tech. It often meant working late hours, impacting my personal time. There's not much push from leadership for better boundaries, which is a bummer.
Advice to Management: Managers should really enforce boundaries and push back on unrealistic deadlines. It would help a lot with burnout among engineering teams.

Hybrid Work is Decent, but Has Limits
Pros: It's nice that they offer hybrid work for most teams, especially as a Software Engineer. You don't have to be in the Sunnyvale, CA office every single day. That bit of WFH flexibility helps with errands and personal stuff.
Cons: Don't expect full remote options unless you're in a very specific role. They're definitely pushing for more time back in the office. It feels like flexibility is shrinking, not growing, for big tech employees here.
Advice to Management: Consider expanding truly remote roles for certain positions, not just hybrid. It would help retain talent in this competitive internet services industry.

Leadership Often Falls Short at This Big Tech Company
Pros: Working as a Software Engineer, I've met some incredibly bright engineers who are dedicated. You get to work on impactful projects in a big tech environment. The hybrid work setup is solid from the Sunnyvale, CA office.
Cons: The biggest issue is the inconsistent leadership. There's often a lack of clear vision from the top, which really makes project planning tough. Mid-level managers sometimes struggle to empower their teams, creating a micromanaged feeling for us developers.
Advice to Management: Upper management needs to set a clearer product vision and communicate it consistently. Invest in better training for middle managers so they can truly empower their engineering teams instead of micromanaging.

Okay Culture, Depends on Your Team
Pros: There's a lot of smart people here, especially within the engineering teams in the Sunnyvale office. You can learn a lot from your colleagues. Some projects in the internet services and digital advertising space are actually pretty cool.
Cons: The overall big tech corporate culture feels a bit stuck. It's tough to get clear direction from leadership. You often see internal politics, which can be frustrating for a software engineer trying to get things done.
Advice to Management: Focus on giving teams a clear vision and empower them more. Cut down on the internal politics to foster a more innovative environment.

Solid Benefits, But Compensation Can Lag
Pros: The health insurance plans are really good, and the 401k match is pretty decent for a corporate setting. You'll get solid benefits, which is a plus at a big tech company like Yahoo. It definitely makes a difference for families.
Cons: Base pay can feel a bit low, especially for experienced Software Engineer roles in ad tech. Stock refreshers aren't as competitive as some rivals, so overall compensation isn't always aligned with market rates. It's tough if you're looking for that huge salary bump.
Advice to Management: Re-evaluate the compensation structure, especially base salaries and refreshers, to be more competitive with other big tech and ad tech players. It's crucial for retaining talent.

Decent for Stability, but Leadership is Hit or Miss
Pros: The benefits package is pretty solid for a big tech company, especially healthcare. I've also really liked my immediate team; they're all super helpful and collaborative in the Sunnyvale, CA office.
Cons: Leadership often feels disconnected from the day-to-day for Software Engineer roles. There's a lack of clear strategy and frequent reorganizations, which is tough in the competitive digital media industry.
Advice to Management: Management needs to communicate a clearer vision and stick to it. Constant pivots make it hard for engineering teams to build effectively and stay motivated.
