Solid public service career with great work-life balance
Pros: Excellent work-life balance and job security as a Transportation Planner. Supportive colleagues and good training for civil engineering. State benefits, particularly the pension, are very appealing for public service careers at Caltrans.
Cons: Career growth is slow due to bureaucracy. Approval processes can delay projects. Some legacy systems are outdated, affecting transportation planning efficiency. Management communication could be clearer on departmental changes.
Advice to Management: I'd advise leadership to streamline the promotion process and update some of the legacy IT systems to improve efficiency. Better and more consistent communication regarding company-wide changes would also be greatly appreciated by employees.

Stable Career with Good Work-Life Balance in Public Service
Pros: Working as a Transportation Engineer at Caltrans provides great job stability and good work-life balance, which is important for me. My colleagues are supportive, and there are decent opportunities for professional development in the civil engineering field, like preparing for a P.E. license. It's rewarding to serve the public by working on California's essential infrastructure projects.
Cons: However, the promotion process can be slow, and you do encounter some bureaucracy and legacy systems that can make project approvals take longer than ideal.
Advice to Management: Focus on streamlining some of the internal approval processes and continue investing in modernizing IT systems to boost efficiency for engineering teams.

Solid Public Service Gig, Great Job Security
Pros: As a Civil Engineer, the job security at Caltrans is top-notch. It's the public sector, so layoffs aren't a concern, which is huge. You get good state benefits and a consistent 40-hour work week onsite.
Cons: Raises are slow to come by, which can be tough for experienced engineers. The bureaucratic nature of a large government agency means projects can drag. Career growth isn't fast-paced.
Advice to Management: Consider speeding up promotion cycles and offer more competitive salaries for experienced engineering roles. Modernize some internal processes to cut down on unnecessary red tape.

Decent public service, but culture needs a refresh
Pros: The job security is solid for public sector engineering roles, which is a huge plus. We often had good health benefits, and for Civil Engineers, the work-life balance was generally decent. It's good to know you're contributing to California's infrastructure.
Cons: The company culture felt pretty hierarchical and resistant to change. Innovation often gets bogged down in bureaucracy, especially in the Sacramento office. There's a lot of "that's how we've always done it" thinking, which makes it hard to modernize transportation planning.
Advice to Management: Try to embrace new ideas more and empower teams to innovate. Breaking down some of the old ways of doing things would really help improve morale and efficiency for future infrastructure projects.

State job offers solid security, decent benefits
Pros: As a Transportation Engineer, the job security here is really solid. Being with a state government agency like Caltrans means you don't really worry about layoffs, even during slower economic times. It's a stable career in public sector transportation.
Cons: However, that stability means career growth can be pretty slow. Promotions for engineering roles take a long time and salaries don't jump much year-to-year. The bureaucracy in Sacramento can really slow things down.
Advice to Management: Speed up promotion cycles and streamline project approval processes. Improve avenues for faster salary progression for high performers.

Solid work-life balance in state government
Pros: I've had pretty solid work-life balance as a Transportation Engineer here. Most weeks are a standard 40 hours, which is great for family life. Being in the Sacramento office means a consistent schedule, not a lot of surprise travel.
Cons: Sometimes project deadlines mean longer days, but it's not super common. The bureaucracy can be frustrating though, it definitely slows down our transportation engineering projects. Don't expect rapid career growth here either.
Advice to Management: Try to update some of the older internal systems and processes. It would really help efficiency and make day-to-day work smoother for the engineering teams.
