Leadership at Fyfe: Can Be Inconsistent
Pros: Some of the senior leadership genuinely want to see you succeed. My direct manager in the Houston, TX office was a great mentor. It's good for new Project Engineers starting out.
Cons: Upper management struggles with consistent direction. They often change plans for big technical projects without much warning. This can make career growth feel stagnant sometimes.
Advice to Management: Work on clearer communication and sticking to a project vision. Project Engineers need more stable guidance.

Decent Company, But Work-Life Balance Suffers
Pros: You get some flexibility with the hybrid work model, which helps a lot. For Software Engineer roles, you can sometimes set your own pace between agile sprints. The benefits package is pretty solid for a big tech company.
Cons: It's common to work more than 40 hour weeks, especially during crunch times. Leadership doesn't always protect teams from scope creep, making work-life balance tough. The expectations can be really high in the Austin office.
Advice to Management: Try to manage project scope better so teams don't burn out with constant overtime. Protect your engineers from unrealistic deadlines.

Solid place for structural engineering careers
Pros: Job security is pretty solid here, especially as a Field Engineer. There's always a steady pipeline of construction projects, so I never really worried about layoffs. It's a stable corporate environment.
Cons: Career growth can feel a bit slow sometimes; opportunities for advancement aren't always clear. The compensation for a structural engineering role in San Diego isn't stellar compared to other industries, it's just decent.
Advice to Management: Focus more on clear career pathing for employees and review compensation ranges to stay competitive, especially in a market like San Diego.

Hybrid Model is Okay, Could Be Better
Pros: The hybrid work model is a decent perk. You get a couple of days to work from home, which helps with the commute in San Francisco. For us Civil Engineer roles, it's pretty good when you don't have field visits. The WFH option makes project planning a bit easier if you're not tied to the office.
Cons: But if you're in a role that requires more onsite work or client meetings, that flexibility really drops. The core office hours are pretty strict, so shifting your day around for personal stuff can be tough. It's not like a big tech company where you just manage your own time.
Advice to Management: Trust your employees more with their schedules, especially for those non-field based engineering roles. Focus on project outcomes rather than strict clock-watching for the hybrid teams. It would help a lot with employee morale.

Solid engineering firm, but growth is slow
Pros: Projects are steady, which helps with job security, especially for onsite work in construction materials testing. I always know I'll have hours here. There's a strong sense of team within my department.
Cons: Career growth is pretty slow, and it's tough to move up. The pay for Field Engineer roles isn't super competitive for this industry in San Diego. Management can be a bit old-school with new ideas.
Advice to Management: Try to create clearer paths for career advancement. Consider updating salary bands to attract and retain top talent in geotechnical engineering.

Pay is Okay, Benefits Need Work at Fyfe
Pros: The base salary for my software development role was decent, especially considering I was fresh out of college. They offer a solid 401k match, which is a big plus for a mid-sized company in this market. The hybrid work schedule is pretty flexible.
Cons: Health insurance plans aren't great; high deductibles make them tough to use. I didn't see much in terms of bonuses or equity, which is common in the tech industry now. Raises were pretty small, not keeping up with inflation or market rates.
Advice to Management: Management should seriously review the health insurance options and consider offering more competitive total compensation, including bonuses and equity, to attract and retain talent in the Austin, TX tech scene. Small annual raises aren't cutting it anymore.

Job Security is Decent, but Growth Can Be Slow
Pros: Job security is definitely a plus here. As a Project Engineer, I've seen consistent project pipeline, especially in construction testing. You don't worry about layoffs much.
Cons: Career progression for field-based roles can feel really slow. There aren't many clear paths to move up quickly. Management could do better at outlining promotion criteria.
Advice to Management: Focus on creating clearer career ladders for technical staff, especially Project Engineers. It'd help with retention.
