Tough to balance life as an Ops Coordinator
Pros: You learn a ton about maritime logistics. The team in the Houston office was generally supportive, which helped with stressful times. It's a solid place to get experience in the port agency business.
Cons: Work-life balance as an Operations Coordinator here is tough. Expect long hours, sometimes past 50-60 hour weeks, especially during peak seasons. The on-call duties for shipping operations really impact personal time.
Advice to Management: Consider more staffing or better rotation for port agency duties. It would really help with employee burnout.

Long Days for Operations, Decent Pay
Pros: You get a ton of exposure to shipping logistics and port operations, which is great for career growth in the industry. The team is generally solid, and I learned a lot really fast. It's a fast-paced environment if you thrive on that.
Cons: Work-life balance is pretty bad as an Operations Coordinator. You're constantly on call, and 10-12 hour days are normal, not the exception. Forget about work flexibility; it's mostly onsite and you're needed all the time.
Advice to Management: Try to implement better staffing models so Operations Coordinators aren't so overworked. A proper on-call rotation would help a lot.

Work-life is okay for some roles here.
Pros: As an Operations Coordinator, I've found there's some decent vacation time which helps with burnout. You generally get your weekends off, which is a plus for the shipping industry. The onsite team in Houston, TX is usually pretty supportive.
Cons: Work-life balance can be tough when port schedules shift unexpectedly. You're often tied to your phone for urgent client needs, even after hours. It's not a 40-hour week every time; sometimes it's more like 50+ for vessel operations.
Advice to Management: Try to staff adequately to reduce the burden of unexpected shifts on current employees. Clearer boundaries for after-hours contact would really help morale.

Culture's a bit mixed at Inchcape Houston
Pros: You'll find some really dedicated people in the local teams. Working closely with other Operations Coordinators in the Houston office can be great, there's a good sense of camaraderie on a local level.
Cons: The overall company culture feels very fragmented, typical for a large corporate structure in global shipping. There's often a disconnect between management's vision and daily reality for us working directly with vessel operations.
Advice to Management: Senior leadership needs to actually engage with frontline staff more to understand the cultural challenges. Invest in better internal communication across different regions; it's a huge global company, but we don't always feel connected.

Decent Team, Corporate Vibe, Slow to Change
Pros: As an Operations Coordinator, the team in the Houston office was generally supportive. It's a stable company in maritime logistics, so there's good job security. We often had casual Fridays and some small team events, which was nice for breaking up the standard 9-5 week.
Cons: What's the company culture like? It's pretty old-school and definitely a corporate environment. Innovation isn't really a thing, and decision-making can be super slow. Sometimes it feels like there's resistance to new ideas, even for basic process improvements in our onsite roles.
Advice to Management: Try to embrace modern work practices and technology more. Encourage feedback from employees, especially for onsite roles, and actually act on it to make things more efficient and improve the overall atmosphere.
